Thunderbird Speedway, AmeriFlex Challenge VI at Salina on tap for OCRS

by John Rittenoure - TULSA, Okla. (September 20, 2021) - A big weekend of racing is on tap for the AmeriFlex / OCRS IMCA Sprint Cars starting on Friday night at Thunderbird Speedway and ending on Saturday with the AmeriFlex / Challenge VI at Salina Highbanks Speedway.

The AmeriFlex / OCRS IMCA Sprinters last visited the historic Thunderbird Speedway half-mile on May 30 and Steven Shebester charged from 10th starting to second on the final lap. Shebester then passed Jake Martens on the final turn for the win.

Friday will be the 17th sanctioned show of the season for the OCRS and will pay $1,000-to-win in the A-Feature and $250-to-start.

Race time Friday is 7:30.

Saturday the anxiety turns up a notch when the AmeriFlex / OCRS IMCA Sprint Cars travel to Salina Highbanks Speedway for the AmeriFlex Challenge VI. Up for grabs is $3,000 to the A-Feature winner from a purse that pays $1,000 just to start.

The format of Saturday’s show is as follows:
35 or less cars will follow standard OCRS event format of pill draw and passing points with a Top 8 redraw.
35 or more cars: Drivers will draw for heat race starting spot. The Top 30 in heat race passing points will transfer into three qualifiers going 8 laps with the top 18 inverted while the balance of the field being lined up by heat race passing points. Following the qualifiers the passing point totals will be combined to set the B and A-Main lineup. Feature lineups will be straight up.

Alex Sewell became the first repeat Challenge winner last season after picking up his first $3,000 victory in 2019. Veteran Mike Goodman won in 2018, Mickey Walker in 2017 and Sean McClelland won the first Challenge race in 2016.

Sewell also won at Salina when the OCRS last stopped there in May.

Joe Bob Lee, with two victories on the season, comes into the weekend leading the points race over Casey Wills. Wills is still looking for his first win of the season and only trails Lee by 66 points.

Race time Saturday is 7.
