By John Rittenoure - CANEY, Kans. (July 3, 2020) - A good starting position was important at Caney Valley Speedway on Friday and Alex Sewell took full advantage to win his first AmeriFlex / OCRS Sprint feature of the season.

Sewell became the fifth different winner in six events run so far on the 2020 AmeriFlex / OCRS tour.

After winning his heat race from the second row, Sewell drove his Sewell Mechanical, Action Collision sponsored sprinter out to an early lead and never looked back.

“Its the first time all season we have been lucky enough to catch a break in the heat race and go forward and put us in the top four of the redraw,” Sewell said of pole starting position. “It shows how important being in the top four of the redraw is.”

Six yellow flags and one red kept Sewell in clean air and away from lapped traffic in the 25-lapper.

“There was a lot of yellows,” Sewell said. “My car was a little tight on the restarts so I didn’t know if I wanted to race lap traffic or stay on the bottom. I was comfortable with the restarts I was getting. I felt I was not challenged too much. If they were going to pass me they were going to pass me on the outside.”

Sewell gave credit to his dad, Andy, and Rob Forehand who keep the team ready to race.

“Robbie and my dad do a great job on this car, they have all year long” Sewell said of his crew. “I can’t thank them enough. After working all day we work on the car. It takes a lot of effort.”

Sewell also thanked promoter Kerry Gorby for his track prep.

“The track tonight was a lot better then I have seen it here in a long time,” Sewell said. “There was a lot more grip. Gorby did a great job tonight.”

In the early going Terry Easum and Avery Goodman gave chase of Sewell. Goodman got around Easum on lap three only to give the runner-up position back on lap four. Joe Bob Lee was able to pass Goodman for third on lap eight. Goodman was involved in a lap 15 crash and Andrew Deal took over third on the restart. On lap 20 Deal passed Easum for second. Cameron Hagin and Zach Chappell rounded out the top five.

Casey Buechler advanced from 15th starting to finish sixth and earn the DFR Discount Tire Hard Charger award.
